Makhana — or fox nuts — have been a staple of Indian kitchens for thousands of years. Used in temples, cooked during festivals, prescribed by Ayurvedic practitioners. Yet somehow, this ancient superfood had been completely overlooked by the modern snack industry.
We were tired of snacking on processed chips and empty calories while this incredible, natural, protein-packed seed sat in the background. So in 2024, in Pune, we decided to do something about it.
DesiPopd started with one mission: to make makhana the snack India reaches for first.
After a conversation about how India's snacking culture was broken — all chips and no nutrition — the idea for DesiPopd is born over a bowl of home-roasted makhana.
We travel to Bihar and Madhya Pradesh to source directly from lotus farmers. We learn about the harvest, the roasting process, and why quality at the source matters above everything.
After months of testing, we perfect our three core flavours — Plain, Crunchy & Salty, and Prasadam. Our first 500 packs sell out in 3 days to friends, family, and early fans.
We officially launch DesiPopd online. With a website, a mission, and the best makhana in India — we're just getting started.
